Midjourney’s Retexture - Edit YOUR OWN IMAGES in Midjourney's AI Image Editor!

What is Retexture AI Image Editor in Midjourney?

Retexture is a powerful AI Image Editor feature in Midjourney that allows you to modify the texture, material, or surface appearance of objects in your images while maintaining their original shape and composition. This feature is particularly useful when you want to:

  • Transform the material of objects (e.g., from wood to metal)
  • Change the surface texture (e.g., from smooth to rough)
  • Modify the pattern or finish of items in your image

Who Can Use Retexture AI Image Editor?

The Retexture AI Image Editor feature is currently in testing phase and is available to select users who meet the following criteria:

  • Users who have generated at least 10,000 images
  • Users with an annual subscription
  • Users who have maintained monthly subscriptions for the past 12 months

Please note that this feature is currently only available through the Midjourney website and is not accessible to all users. Access to this feature is being gradually rolled out as part of the testing phase.

Watch the tutorial above for a detailed demonstration of how to effectively use the Retexture feature in your creative projects.

Main Features of Retexture AI Image Editor

1. Move/Resize Tool

This tool allows you to adjust the position and size of your image on the canvas. After selecting it, you can:

  • Click and drag the image to move it around
  • Drag the corners to resize
  • Use the Image Scale slider for precise size control
Making your image smaller gives Midjourney more space to creatively fill in around it, similar to the "Zoom Out" feature but with greater control.

2. Erase/Vary Region Tools

This set of tools is perfect for making precise modifications to your image:

  • Erase Tool: Paint over parts you want to change or recreate
  • Restore Tool: Easily bring back erased parts if you make a mistake or change your mind
  • Brush Size Adjustment: Use the slider to adjust tool size for better control over details
After erasing areas, use the Imagine bar at the top to edit your prompt and tell Midjourney what to add or modify in these areas. This feature is similar to the "Vary Region" command in Discord.

3. Aspect Ratio/Custom Zoom/Pan

Want to change the shape of your image? The editor provides multiple ways:

  • Aspect Ratio Selector: Choose from various preset ratios (1:1, 3:4, 16:9, etc.)
  • Edge Adjustment: Drag the gray bars on the edges to extend or crop your image
  • Panning Function: Precisely adjust which part of your image is visible
When you select a new aspect ratio, an outline will show the new shape your image will take. After submission, Midjourney fills in the extra space for a fresh look.

4. Exporting Your Work

When your edits are complete, you have two options:

  • Upscale to Gallery: Add your creation to your Midjourney gallery
  • Download Image: Save directly to your device
Keep in mind that images created in the Full Editor won't appear on your Create or Organize pages unless you've chosen to Upscale them. Images are saved within the editor, so you can revisit them anytime on the Edit page to continue working or to Upscale and Download.
